Mrs. McElyea died Aug. 10, 2006, in Houston.
She was born Jan. 22, 1917, in Cherokee County to the late Matthew Grinstead Armstrong and Lela Olivia Hilton, and received her bachelor's degree from Sam Houston State University. She was a homemaker, a schoolteacher in various schools, and a member of First Church of the Nazarene in Jacksonville. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Arthur Lee McElyea; grandson, Mark Dodd; sisters, Agnes Thompson, Margaret Etheridge, LaNita Criswell and Maxine Armstrong; and brothers, Clarence and Willie Armstrong.
Survivors include daughters, June Lawler, Mount Pleasant, and Jean Dodd, Houston; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers are Don Dodd, Jess Hamilton, Blane Stewart, Spencer Dodd, Wade Amerson, Ashley Amerson, Les Wright and Peter Licata.
Honorary pallbearers are Glen Lawler, Scott Amerson and Andrew Amerson.
Family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
