A family story states he died on the California Trail along the North Platte River in Wyoming heading west during the California Gold Rush. Some of his uncles went to California from his home area of Missouri in 1850 in the Belshe-Miller-Greenup expedition, so it's possible he was part of that party, though about half of all male residents of this part of Missouri may have also headed west during this period!
