Wayne County MI Archives News.....Mrs. Anna Koenig 1960

Detroit News
Mrs. Anna Koenig died today in her home in the little two-story red brick
building at Clinton and St. Antoine streets, where she had lived since 1865.
She was 95 years old, and until recent weeks was in good health.

On the first floor of the building is the grocery her husband, Henry, opened
when the building was put up, and which she managed after his death in 1870,
until her only son, Henry, took it over. The store is an unofficial gathering
place for policemen, attorneys, judges and others who have business, official
or unofficial, in the City buildings which overshadow the Koenig home.

Mrs. Koenig never moved from her home, steadfastly refusing the offers of her
children and grandchildren who wished to give her a home in residential
sections. She watched the Public Service Building, Receiving and St. Mary's
Hospitals, the Municipal Courts Building and the Police Headquarters as they
were built, and saw the neighborhood change from one of little homes and
pasture land, with tree-shaded streets, to a district devoted to municipal
business, with rushing ambulances and patrol wagons andmen with handcuffs and
pistols and others with bulging brief-cases. A cemetery which stood near the
house is now Clinton Park, and only a few of the houses which were up in those
days are still standing.

Mrs. Koenig saw most of the buildings along Gratiot Avenue as they were built
and she saw most of them come down, for work on the widening of the street has
been in progress several weeks, and her most engrossing interest was watching
the wreckers. She spent all of her waking time at the windows of her home,
speaking at times as some particular building came down, of the day it was
built and things which happened as Gratiot avenue became a well-traveled
thoroughfare.

Mrs. Koenig was born in Westphalia, Germany, in 1837, and came to Detroit when
she was 19. She married Henry Koenig when she was 20 and went with him to
Eagle Harbor, in the Upper Peninsula, where they lived several years. Then
they returned to Detroit and built their store. The building was the biggest
and most imposing structure for blocks in those days and was regarded with
esteem by the neighbors.

In additon to her son, Mrs. Koenig leaves a daughter, Mrs. Anna Hartman, 10
grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Monday in St. Mary's Church, with burial in Mt.
Elliott Cemetery.
