In March of 1914 the family emigrated to Delmont, South Dakota. Soon thereafter they moved to Newtonburg, Wisconsin, 7 miles southwest of Manitowoc. There Hannah briefly attended St. John's Lutheran School. When the family moved to Manitowoc, she enrolled as a second grader in First German Evangelical Lutheran School, from which she graduated in 1926, soon after her confirmation in the Lutheran faith. She graduated from Manitowoc Lincoln High School in 1930 and worked briefly as a grocery clerk.
On July 18, 1931, she was united in marriage with Norman R. Balge of Manitowoc. The Lord blessed this marriage with two children, Richard (1932) and Barbara (1942). Husband and wife faithfully provided for the Christian training and education of their children.
In 1946 the family moved to Milwaukee, where they lived until their retirement in 1974. Through the years Hannah was foster mother to twenty-six infants, worked as a nurse's aide and then ward clerk at Milwaukee County Hospital, and sold pictures and mirrors at Gimbels Department Store. After retirement, Norman and Hannah lived in rural Wautoma, where they were members of Peace Lutheran Church in Wautoma. After her husband's death in 1977, Hannah moved from the country to the village.
In 1983 she married Frederick Schultz, and they lived in Shawano until the time of his death in 1986. In 1988 she married Frederick Shatswell and they lived in Somerset until his death in 1993. She moved to Cedarburg in early 1994 in order to be close to her children.
She was preceded in death by her parents, five siblings (Martha Hischke, Henry, Gerhard, Frederick, and Hildegarde Pipkorn), and daughter Barbara (the late Gary) Kieson.
She leaves to mourn her passing and await the Day of Resurrection her son Rev. Richard (Lois) Balge; seven grandchildren: Rev. Daniel (Bethel) Balge, Carl (Lisa) Balge, Rev. Jonathan (Julie) Balge, Ellen Balge, Cynthia (the late Christopher) Mack, Tamara (Joel) Kunz, and Scott Kieson; great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and other relatives and friends.
In recent years Hannah suffered from failing eyesight, which gradually deprived her of the joys of reading and social card playing. During the night of January 23-24 she suffered a stroke. She departed this life in the early morning of January 25, at the age of 93 years and two months.
To the end, she was faithful in hearing God's Word, receiving the Lord's Supper, and supporting His work as a member of Calvary Ev. Lutheran Church, Thiensville, Wisconsin.
Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith... Hebrews 12:2
