The Burlington Hawk-Eye

New London (IA), March 8 -- Newton Despain was born at Louisville, Kentucky, February
18, 1854, and died at his home in this city with apoplexy Monday afternoon at _ o'clock.
He came with his parents to Iowa at the age of five years and lived on a farm four and
one-half miles east of this city, living there until his marriage with Miss Nancy Hanks,
April 29, 1869. To this union were born four children, three boys and one girl: J. F.
Despain of Fairfield, Mrs. J. H. Hileman of Rome, Earnest and Perry of New London, who
together with the widow, ten grandchildren, and two brothers, Milton and Silas Despain of
this city, survive to mourn his loss.

Mr. and Mrs. Despain moved to New London four years ago from their country home in
the Millersburg neighborhood, where they have enjoyed a pleasant retired life together.
Mr. Despain professed Christianity at the early age of fourteen years, and although he
never joined with any denomination, he believed in the fatherhood of God and the
brotherhood of man and followed in the footsteps of his Master.

The funeral will be held this Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 at the Methodist Protestant
Church, Reverend Mr. Linder officiating. Interment at the Burge cemetery.
