Jacob was the son of John Uhlrich Born (b.6/28/1812) and Annamaria Mueller (b. 2/27/1814), both of Berne, Switzerland, emigrating to America in 1852. Jacob was skilled in the manufacture of leather goods, crafting saddles, harnesses, and other leather articles.
He served in the Army of the Confederacy during the Civil War with the Tennessee Volunteers.
