In the name of God Amen: the 19th day of March in the year of our Lord 1714/15: I Matthew Beckwith of Lyme In the County of New London and Colony of Connecticut: being very sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be given to God – therefore calling to mind the mortality of my body, and knowing that it appointed for man once to Die, Do make and ordain this my Last will and Testament; that is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my Soul Into ye hands of God that gave it, Hoping through the Merits Death and Passion of My Savior Jesus Christ to have full and free pardon and forgiveness of all my Sins and to Inherit Everlasting Life: and my body I commit to ye Earth to be decently buried at ye Discretion of my Executor hereafter named. Nothing doubting but at ye General Resurrection I Shall Receive the Same again Through ye mighty power of God: and as Touching such Worldly Estate whoever with it hath Pleased God to Bless me in this Life I Give Devise and Dispose of ye same In ye following manner and form that is to say: first I Will that all those debts and debtor which I do owe In Right or Conscience to any manner of person or persons whatever shall be well and truly Consented and paid In Convenient time after my Decease]by my Executor hereafter named: Item: I Give and bequeath to Sarah my Dearly Beloved Wife the sum of 2 pounds equivalent to money In addition to what I engaged to give her]by Covenant before our Marriage, and one whole year's Provision to be paid by my Executor hereafter named within two month after my Decease.
Item: I give and bequeath to my Seven Children which I had by my first wife: Namely: Matthew, James, and Jonah: Prudence, Elizabeth, Katherine and Sarah: all my Goods and Credits together with all my movable Estate: viz: as Cattle, horses, Sheep and Swine as also all my household stuffed bedding with all ye appurtenances thereunto belonging or In any way appertaining, as also all things of what Sort or kind so ever In ye said house as Pewter, brass, pots, kettles, etc. as also all my Carpenters tools: and tools of husbandry of all Sorts as Carts, plows, yokes, chains, axes, hoes, etc To be Equally Divided amongst my Said Seven Children viz: Share and Share alike, and the Distribution thereof to be made as soon as may be Convenient after my death, [ease leaving?] the same to my Executor –
Item: I do hereby Constitute and appoint my Well beloved Son James Beckwith To be the Sole Executor of this my Last Will and Testament
Item: I Give and Bequeath to my beloved Daughter named Grisell which I had by my Second Wife and to her husband Eliakam Cooley my now Dwelling house and my barn with all of the rest of my buildings and fences] which I have Erected on the Lands or Mos-uage [?] which I now Possess; the Said Land being willed to her my Said Daughter by her Grandfather Mr Matthew Griswold Deceased (By Deed of Gift) after her Mothers and my Decease: -
Item: I Do therefore also hereby Will and bequeath to her my Said Daughter Grisell and to her husband Eliakam Cooley all the Lands and meadows which was given to her by her Said Grandfather with all the buildings and fences thereon erected or said vicinity
I Desire also that Insign John Coult would assist my Said Executor of this my Last will and Testament: In Dividing my Estate among my children etc
Ratifying and Confirming this and no other to be my Last Will and testament In witness whereof I have hereunto sot [set] my hand and seal, the Day and year above written
