Charles Ray Pickens, 71, a community leader well known in the car business for more than 30 years, died Wednesday at Baylor Hospital in Dallas.

Pickens was born in Campbell on January 17, 1931, the son of C.M. Pickens and Maurine Pickens. He sold his first car at his father's Greenville Dodge dealership, Pickens Motor Company, at age 14.

He graduated from Greenville High School in 1948 where he was a yell leader and voted "Most Handsome."

Following graduation from East Texas State University in 1952, he found that he missed selling cars and returned to that business where he was actively engaged until his retirement. Following a number of years at his father's "Dodge House," on Lee Street, he was associated with Grady Chevrolet.

He and his wife Ann built the Le Chateau Apartments on Stonewall Street in 1968. Tenants there became an extended family for the Pickens, several making their homes there for decades.

Pickens was a member of the First Baptist Church for more than 50 years. He taught Sunday school there for more than 20 years and was sought after for his singing voice at weddings and funerals.

Pickens was diagnosed with cancer in June.

Pickens is survived by his wife Ann, daughter and son-in-law Sheri and John Terrien of Frisco and grandchildren Alex, Taylor Ann and Aren Charles Terrien.

He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Sharon Kay and sister Dorothy Anglin.

Services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday.

The family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
