Amos Henry Pruitt was not his name. His son was Amos Henry Pruitt but he was just Amos Pruitt (no middle name can be found in any records which include his father's will, his gravestone, his three marriage records, his land purchases, his name in county government service). Also his father was just James Pruitt (no middle initial). Many have believed he was James R Pruitt but James R Pruitt was his nephew James Roady Pruitt. The name of Amos' mother has been assumed as being Mary for years with no proof. Amos' step-mother was the former Mary Costley. No marriage record can be found for his parents and the only reference to his is in the story about his sister Matilda who wandered off one day and was referred to as "The Lost child of Summer 1822" in Greene Co IL history. His mother is simply referred to as Mrs James Pruitt. As I said Amos Pruitt was married 3 times, in order: 1) Eliza Wyatt; 2) Mrs Mary Hester Haliford nee Stout; and 3) Mrs Jane Sinclair nee Cox.

Amos' birth place is disputed. If he was born in Illinois, then it was in what was then known as Madison Co IL. However, it is believed that his parents did not move from Tennessee with his grandparents and other family members in 1806. It is possible that his parents remained in Tennessee until after his birth and then moved in 1808 or 1809. Also, he died in Jersey Co IL.
