HOWARD W. STERNER, Ex Burgess Sterner Dies
Howard W.Sterner, of 10 South Nicholas Street Saint Clair, former chief burgess and councilman, died on Sunday in Pottsville Hospital.
Mr. Sterner, who held his position on the Saint Clair Council for 20 years prior to his retirement on Dec 31, was a 50 year member of three organizations, the P.O.S. of A., Alert fire Co., and Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
Born in Mill Creek, Pottsville R.D, he was a son of the late Edwin N. Sterner and DeMaris Silcox Sterner.
A former blacksmith, he had been employed by the Reading, Railroad, and at Wadesville, Pine Forest and Maple Hill collieries. He last worked at Maple Hill until 1953.
He was a member of Masonic Anthracite Lodge 285 of Saint Clair, and Saint Clair Fish and Game Association.
Surviving are his wife, the former Mabel Willingham; a daughter Dorothy, wife of Oscar Hagstrom of Huntington, N.Y.; a son Edwin of Saint Clair; a sister Mrs.William Shellenberger, of Sayre, and a brother, Nathaniel, of Mill Creek, also six grandchildren.
Funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon from James H. Evans Funeral Home, Saint Clair. Interment will be made in I.O.O.F. Cemetery at Saint Clair. The Rev.Andrew Heller, pastor of Primitive Methodist Church will officiate at services.
