Richard John Hayes was born March 31, 1934 in Taylor county, Iowa, near Bedford, one of nine children of Glen Hayes and Mabel Irene (Inman) Hayes.

Richard graduated from Conway High School and then attended Finley College in Kansas City, Missouri, for two years.

He became a land surveyor, a profession he worked in from 1950 until his retirement in 1993. He surveyed in Kansas and Arizona, holding professional licenses in both states. Richard and Wilma moved back to Lenox in January of 1994.

Richard was united in marriage to Wilma E. Barker on April 2, 1954 at the Lenox Christian Church. Their three children, Jefferey, Cathy and Russell made the family complete.

Richard was baptized this past March at the Lenox Christian Church.

He died August 24, 1996 at his home in Lenox, at the age of 62 years, 4 months, 23 days.

Those who preceded him in death were his father, Glen Hayes; his father-in-law Jesse Barker; a sister-in-law Linda (Barker) White; and a brother-in-law Claude Hague.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 42 years, Wilma Hayes of Lenox; a son Kim Jefferey Hayes and wife Starlene of Drain, Oregon; a daughter Cathy Hall and husband Jeffrey of Bremerton, Washington; and son Russell W. Hayes and wife Cristina of Bluffton, South Carolina; six grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; four greatgrandchildren; mother Mabel Hayes of Council Bluffs, Iowa; brothers: Paul Hayes and wife Shirley of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Vernon Hayes and wife Joan of Glenwood, Iowa; Dennis Hayes and wife Ruth of Ellston, Iowa; and Dean Hayes and wife Jeannine of Osage Beach, MO; sisters: Garland Nissen and husband Bud of Omaha, NE; Ruth Huddle of Omaha, NE; Lola Wright and husband Russell of Spencer, Iowa.; and Jeannette Williams and husband Harold of Kellerton, Iowa; many nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 28 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lenox Christian Church with Rev. Dean Woldruff officiating. Visitation was Tuesday evening at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox.

Burial was in the North Fairview Cemetery in Lenox.

Serving as pallbearers were Bob Brown, Harold Williams, Russell Wright, Vernon Hayes, Dean Hayes and Dennis Hayes.

A memorial fund has been established in Richard's name.

Coen-Beaty Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
