The son of Matthias & Mary A. (Robinson) Hartman, he married Susannah Anderson and fathered Catherine Margaret (b. 09/27/51 - married a Minick), Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" (b. 10/03/53 - married Charles Baker), Frances Jane (b. 11/20/54 - married Samuel S. Foose), Sarah (b. @1856), Nancy Celeste (b. 09/14/57 - married James Adam Shumaker), Teresa Gruver (b. 03/20/59 - married Lewis Bistline), James Anderson (b. 07/28/61), and Ida May (b. 05/07/63). In 1860, he was a laborer living with his family in Tuscarora Township, Juniata County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Carlisle March 16, 1865, as a private with Co. A, 149th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was on furlough at muster-out, but the rest of his company discharged June 24, 1865. His discharge date and other military data must await the post-covid-19 re-opening of the National Archives and access to his compiled military service records.

By 1870, he was living in Madison Township, Perry County. and died at his home in Liberty Valley from reported kidney failure.
