Gayhart worked on farms in his younger days as far south as Rice Lake, Wisconsin and then back up to St. Paul. He worked for the U.S. Northern Pacific Railway as a cook where he met his first wife, Blanche Irene Boury, who worked as a stenographer in the office. They were married on February 2, 1916.
Gayhart served in the U.S. Army during World War I. He enlisted on April 8, 1918 and was honorably discharged on December 26, 1918. He served as a Private in the First Company.
Gayhart passed away in Pontiac, Michigan on April 22, 1942.
