The son of Asaph Potter and Johanna (White) Witherell, Arvin moved with his family in the 1840's, settling in Knox County, IL, by 1850.

He married Mary Woodruff 7 Mar 1854, and was blessed with two sons, Arvin Wright and Allen Jesse Witherell, and two daughters Lucy and Laura Witherell.

He enlisted in the Army during the Civil War, in Co. A, Illinois 77th Infantry. After the war, the family settled in Keokuk, Iowa.

He lost his wife in 1897, and he died in the Soldier's Home in Quincy, IL.
