Mary G. Berger, 97 formerly of Spalding, NE, passed away Thursday, September 24, 2015 at the Greeley Care Home in Greeley, NE.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at St. Michael’s Church in Spalding, NE, with Rev. Bernard Berger officiating. She will be buried alongside her parents in Calvary Cemetery at Spalding, NE. Dolce-Scheef Mortuary in Spalding, NE is in charge of the
arrangements.

Mary Genevieve Berger was born January 3, 1918 at Spalding, NE to Vincent and Anna (Herkert) Berger. She was baptized at St. Michael’s Church on January 20, 1918. She attended Greeley County District 38 rural school through the eighth grade and then went to Spalding Academy, graduating in 1936.

Mary’s mother died when she was 17 and she was left to care for her siblings. Her young sister, Caroline was just two years old and three brothers were ages nine, 12, and 15. She stayed home and kept house for her dad on the farm. In 1962, the moved into town with her father Vincent. He passed away in 1971 and she continued to reside in their home until May 2000, when she entered Friendship Villa in Spalding. She entered Greeley Care Home on September 8, 2011 after Friendship Villa closed.

She was a lifelong member of St. Michael’s Church and a member of the Catholic Daughters. Mary did not enjoy good health for most of her life, but she enjoyed her needlework, walks around town, crossword puzzles and her many nieces and nephews.

Mary is survived by her brothers: Lawrence (Catherine) Berger and Francis (Theresa) Berger; one sister Caroline Glaser, all of Spalding; along with many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents Vincent and Anna; her brother Lewis (Margaret) Berger; her brother-in-law Francis Glaser; and a great-great nephew Taylor Craig.
