Mary Griffin was born in 1871 to Lawrence and Mary (Ryerson) Griffin. She entered St. Vincent Convent/School in Dubuque on June 11, 1887 when she was 16 years old. She professed her final vows with the Sisters of the Presentation on October 5, 1889.

While providing care to the sick and infirm, Sister Agnes contracted tuberculosis. In 1918, Mary (Sr. Agnes) Griffin was assigned to teach in Stratton, Colorado along with a group of fellow Sisters of the Presentation. She returned to Dubuque in 1923 and died on January 22, 1924.
