Pilot Officer Dermot Vigors Thesiger of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, whose parents were Captain the Honourable Wilfred Thesiger, DSO and Kathleen (Vigors) Thesiger of Chelsea, London, died in a training accident during World War II. In civilian life, he had been a barrister of the Middle Temple.

Thesiger and three other airmen of 59 Squadron were tragically killed when their Lockheed Hudson V (AM639) went down while on a low-level bombing practice sortie against a wreck in the Humber River. While maneuvering a turn, a wingtip caught the water, causing the aircraft to crash and kill the crew members.

The four airmen who perished in this accident were:-
RAAF Sergeant John Richard HOSKINS,
RAFVR Sergeant Harold Francis NEARY,
RAF Sergeant Eric Stanley NORMORE and
RAFVR Pilot Officer Dermont Vigors THESIGER.
