Obituary for Colonel (Ret) Roger Gordon Bush
Col. [Ret.] Roger Gordon Bush, USAF
1935-2015
Gulfport
Colonel [Ret.] Roger Gordon Bush, age 79, passed peacefully in his sleep on the morning of September 20, 2015.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Octa and Jerry Bush, and his first wife, Suzanne Garner Bush.
Roger was born in East St. Louis, IL, on December 9, 1935. He graduated in 1959 from Southern Illinois University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Education and Applied Science. He later earned a Master of Science in Facility Management from the Air Force Institute of Technology, Air University at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio in 1974.
He was a member of the Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity, and he maintained close ties with the organization and participated in numerous reunions.
As a career military veteran, serving over 26 years in the United States Air Force, Roger was promoted to the level of Colonel and Civil Engineer Commander of Keesler Air Force Base, before retiring from the military life in 1986. During his years of active duty, Roger was stationed in various locations throughout the United States, as well as serving in overseas assignments in Germany, Philippines, Thailand, Japan, and Vietnam. During his service, he received many service recognitions and commendations.
Following his military career, Roger worked as a realtor for Century 21 before beginning his "post-retirement career" as the campus director of the Embry – Riddle Aeronautical University at Keesler Air Force Base. Never one to slow down, Roger also helped many associates and friends as a tax preparer for H&R Block for many years.
Roger was an avid golfer, a lifelong fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and New Orleans Saints, a model railroader, and certified master gardener. He often volunteered his time as the financial secretary and food pantry coordinator for his church, Nugent United Methodist Church, and was a volunteer area supervisor for the AARP Tax Volunteers in the Long Beach, Gulfport, and Biloxi areas.
Fox News lost one of their most loyal viewers with Roger's passing. He was very interested in politics, military, and veteran affairs. He regularly supported organizations such as Disabled American Veterans, USO, and VFW, as well as several cancer support foundations.
Leaving to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 25 years, Nancy Barineau Bush, and their six children, spouses, and eight grandchildren: Michael David Bush and wife, Jacquelyn, of Biloxi; Stephanie Bush Cooper and husband, Brent, and Suzanne and David of Orlando, Florida; Deborah Bush Raley and husband, Kevin, and John, Emma, and Thomas of The Woodlands, Texas; Susan Berry Reeves and husband, David, and Taylor of Gulfport; Timothy Berry of Biloxi; Emily Berry Kennington and husband, Richard, and Griffin and Lucy of Jackson; his aunt, Ester Greer, and his cousin, Hadley Greer, both of St. Louis, MO; his brother- in- law, Dave Garner of San Francisco, CA; his sister-in-law Leslie Barineau and Alexander of Birmingham, AL and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend sincere gratitude and appreciation to Dr. Allison Wall for her compassionate care and dedication.
The visitation for Roger will be held on Thursday, September 24 from 5pm-7pm at Bradford – O'Keefe Funeral Home at 15452 O'Neal Road in Gulfport.
The funeral service will be held on Friday, September 25 at 9:30am at the Bradford – O'Keefe Funeral Home on O'Neal Road with a military honors burial at the National Cemetery in Biloxi at 11:00am.
