In memory of James Carl Conley,
02/17/1920 - 09/17/2015
James Carl Conley, 95, of East Point, Georgia, passed away on September, 17, 2015. Mr. Conley was born in Morganton, North Carolina to the late James and Katherine Conley.
He served in the US Army, 4th Infantry Division, 22nd Infantry Regiment, Platoon Sargent, during WWII and stormed the beaches of Normandy, specifically, Utah Beach. He was wounded at the Battle of Cherburg, France and spent a year recovering in Manchester, England and Denver, Colorado in 1944. During his recovery time he lost his brother in WWII, on September 11, 1944. He retired from General Motors in 1978 after 30 years.
He is preceded in death by his wife Carolyn Henson Conley.
He is survived by his sons, James (Margaret) Conley of Fayetteville, Bradford (Ann) Conley of Sharpsburg; grandchildren: John Conley of Jacksonville, FL, Melinda (Mark) Justice of Acworth, GA, Kristin (Alan) Lamble of Sharpsburg, GA, Michael Conley of Sharpsburg, GA, Stephen (Shannon) Conley of Forest, VA, Elisabeth (Tyler) Smith of Marietta, GA and 6 great-grandchildren.
A graveside funeral service, with military honors, is planned for Monday, September, 21, 2015, at 1:00 PM at College Park Cemetery with Dr. Alex Moses and Pastor Stephen Conley officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 20, 2015 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Mowell Funeral Home in Fayetteville.
