Howard S. Tierney Jr., A Former Executive, 71
Howard Sherwood Tierney Jr., a retired Manhattan business executive, died of liver cancer on Monday at his home in Hobe Sound, Fla. He was 71 years old.
Mr. Tierney, a 1940 graduate of Yale University, briefly attended the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration before entering the Naval Air Force, where, as a pilot, he rose to the rank of lieutenant commander.
In 1945 he entered the pharmaceutical business with E. R. Squibb & Sons and left in 1955 as vice president for overseas operations. He then became president of the Denver Chemical Manufacturing Company. Denver Chemical was later acquired by Max Factor & Company, Norton Simon and then Carter-Wallace Inc., and Mr. Tierney was named executive vice president.
In 1978 he became president of the Culbro Corporation and retired in 1980. He was also a director of several corporations.
He is survived by his wife, the former Jane Hewitt; three daughters,a son, and two sisters, Patricia Byrne of Palm Beach, Fla., and the actress Gene Tierney Lee of Houston.
