VAN WERT — “He was a good guy, no doubt about that!” summarized former Lincolnview Superintendent Ralph Snyder when discussing Milo Schaffner. The long-time Hoaglin Township trustee passed away Tuesday night shortly after making a short speech at the Heart Land Patriots’ Meet the Candidate Night at Trinity Friends Church. Schaffner was on hand at that event to speak out about Ohio House Bill 190 on wind farms and landowner rights. He was pronounced dead shortly after being taken to Van Wert Hospital.

Schaffner was known to speak out about topics without fear. He served multiple terms as a township trustee and has been an outspoken voice challenging wind farm expansion.

“Milo was passionate about doing what he thought was the best thing for the county and for his township,” noted Judge Martin Burchfield. “He genuinely cared and tried to take a common-sense approach.”

Schaffner was also a farmer, president of the Van Wert County Township Association, a member of the Republican Central Committee, and a past president of the Lincolnview Local Schools Board of Education. He also challenged St. Sen. Cliff Hite for the 1st Ohio District State Senate seat in the 2014 Republican primary election.

“I think Milo was good to work with. He was good to reason with. He looked at both sides of the issues, whatever they might be. Milo, I always thought, had pretty good leadership skills, commented Snyder.”Overall, Milo served the community well, both as a board member and board president.”
