Peculiar Death of Young Miner-Laid Down For Final Sleep on Large Belt Attached to Crusher, Leo Carey of Shullsburg, a young man of about 23 years of age, was instantly killed, at the Copeland Mine of that city, Wednesday afternoon.
He had worked the forenoon shift and after eating his dinner, lay down on the inside of the immense belt that drives the compressor. His head was toward the pulley and the motorman started the machinery, not knowing he was there.
The unfortunate man was probably asleep and was drawn between the pulley and belt so quickly that he was killed instantly, being crushed beyond recognition. [Source: Monroe Journal, Jan 2, 1918, @ Monroe, WI Library.]
