Harry was discovered only this past week because I read his mother's will and she mentioned him specifically in dividing her worldly goods. It came as quite a surprise to find a new family member after researching the family for some years. His mom was likely widowed, and her daughter was easy to find because she stayed with her mom, but Harry had gone elsewhere.

Harry's father was out of his family's lives when he and his sister were young; it's not known if he left or died. It's unknown at this time who raised Harry for sure. I have found a person who appears to be Harry in the household of other Lehmans 1860 and 1870 Philadelphia census) suggesting he may have been raised by an uncle's family, George and Julia Lehman. The censuses of his boyhood do not define family relationships as part of the data. His sister Ella Rebecca was raised by their mother, and later their mother and her second husband. Perhaps when his father died or left the kids were divided up because of the thinking that boys need a male role model and girls need their mothers. It seems that his mom, when she'd become single, ended up living with her mother in law and took her daughter Ella there for a time.

In George and Julia Lehman's home, he was raised with various rotating children: Harriette Antoinette (born and died 1865, buried at Odd Fellows), Theodore (1862), Mary Anna (born and died 1866, buried at Odd Fellows), Mary H (born and died 1869, buried at Odd Fellows), George (born and died 1861, buried at Odd Fellows), Robert P. (Born and died 1870, buried at Odd Fellows), and perhaps more I missed whipping through Philadelphia death records.

Harry's father is being studied right now. On Harry's death certificate he is named as "Henry Lehman" but on his sister Ella's death certificate he is named as "Samuel". So far, I can't find an eligible man of either name.

Harry seems to have married Catherine A, aka "Kate" and had a number of children whom I hope to trace; indeed I have tried with little success except for the linked ones below. They seem to include Harry W. (b. Sept. 8, 1891 or 1893), Clarence A. (b. July 7, 1888 or 1889), Lillian (b. May 10, 1899), Annie (b. Nov, 18, 1887), Florence S. (b. 1885, who died young at 2), Kate, Marion (b. 1897), Elsie (b. July 18, 1904), and Blanche (b. April 29, 1886), who may well be the "Blanche Martin" who was the informant on his death certificate. He may have been raised by borrowed family, but Harry was quite the profligate father himself.

On the 1900 census, Harry and Kate live with their kids at the home of Charles Moyer, 8229 Ridge Avenue in Philadelphia's Roxborough section. (Big error- Kate is reported as saying she's had zero kids and zero alive... but Kate and Harry have been married 19 years. Another error: Moyer is listed as uncle to both Kate and Harry which is impossible unless there was intermarriage.)

1910's census shows the family in their own home at 104 Levering, where Kate reports 9 children born, seven alive, and Harry works as a proprietor of an eating house. Right next door is proof that though Harry was raised apart from his full sister Ella's new Storkey family, the families were close - his neighbor is his stepsister (that is, his Storkey stepfather's daughter from his first marriage) , now Mrs. Mary Weir, wife of Harry Weir and mother of Archibald, age 5. This census shows a packed house but if 7 living kids were born to the couple only these are in evidence:

Blanch Lehman Dau F 23 (b. 1887)
Clarence Lehman Son M 21 (b. 1889)
Harry Lehman Son M 17 (b. 1893)
Marion Lehman Dau F 13 (b. 1897)
Lillian Lehman Dau F 10 (b. 1900)
Elsie Lehman Dau F 5 (b. 1905)

1920 had me baffled. The family is still at 104 Levering, so it's them but... suddenly Harry's wife is called Ethel. In the home is Harry Jr age 1 and 1/2. Harry Sr is age 26, Ethel 31- this really doesn't work. Harry age 26 would have been born 1896 so that is almost his son's age who was born 1891-1893. But this elder Harry is still a restaurant proprietor, and his siblings Marion 21 and Clarence 31 work there as a cashier and cook respectively. Also present is mother in law Alice Hull, 50. The way to make this all work is to shift generations and assume our Harry (maybe died and) gave the house and business to his son Harry. That makes this Clarence the right age to be our elder Harry's son, and Marion almost the right age to be his daughter - here shown as 21 but really more like 23.

This theory seems to work further: In 1917 Clarence registers for the WWI draft and says his birthdate is July 7 1888. He says he works for his brother in a restaurant. He's asked if he supports anyone and answers "mother".

By 1940, they are hard to find in the census as they are documented as Lemein, and divorced daughter Blanche Martin and her son Joseph live with them.

It is on their youngest child, Elsie's birth certificate that we learn Harry's wife was Catherine McCartney Lehman. Daughter Elsie and her husband George W. Buehler and 7 year old daughter are in the same household as Harry and Kate for 1930's census in Philadelphia.

In trying to learn more about the family, it is of note that Harry was laid to rest at Roxborough Presbyterian. His mother Mary Ann, at least after Harry's birth, was a member of Ridge Avenue Methodist, but her father (assuming he was Charles Keely) was also laid to rest at Roxborough Presby. Mary Ann herself had joined Ridge Avenue Methodist from her previous church in Germantown, which may well have been the church of her first husband, and Harry's father.

Harry passed at age 84 of chronic nephritis with uremia, an enlarged prostate and cardiovascular disease. His last address was 3537 Sunnyside Avenue in Philadelphia's 38th ward. A three-story townhome in East Falls with four bedrooms, hardwood floors, a cast iron stove and beautiful terraced backyard garden, Harry's old home sold just this year for almost $236,000.
