Albert (Al ) Nicholas Butkovich 74, of Abilene, passed away Friday, September 11, 2015. A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Elmcrest Baptist Church with Jerry Vincent officiating. Burial will follow in the Texas State Veterans Cemetery, under the direction of North’s Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Monday evening in North’s Memorial Chapel, 242 Orange St.

Mr. Butkovich was born February 23, 1941 in Tarrytown, New York to Anthony and Nicolina (Grubessich) Butkovich

Albert (Al) was a career officer in the U.S. Air Force for 23 years and a state auditor for the Texas Comptroller’s Office for 20 years. He and his brothers Anthony and William Butkovich were first-generation Americans in this country as their parents immigrated to the United States from Croatia. He met his wife – Mitsuko Ban – at Yokota, Japan, where they served 2 tours of duty. While in the Air Force, Al also served tours of duty in Thailand, New Jersey, and St. Louis, before retiring after his last tour of duty in San Angelo Texas. Al and Mitsuko moved to Abilene in 1993 for Al’s job with the Comptroller’s office.

Al and Mitsuko have three children – Barbara Jones, Stephen Butkovich, and Jeffrey Butkovich. Both parents were very active in their children’s formative years with involvement in Boy/Girl Scouts, coaching youth sports, and involvement in various booster clubs. The family also traveled extensively, enjoying all of the locations they have lived throughout the years.

Albert will be missed by all his family and friends who loved him very much. He is preceded in death by his parents Anthony and Nicolina Butkovich, his brother Tony Butkovich, his sisters-in-law Grace Butkovich and Margie Butkovich, and his uncles Carl and Vince Butkovich. Al is survived by his wife Mitsuko Butkovich, his brother and his wife William and Judy Butkovich, his sons and their wives Stephen and Kathy and Jeffrey and Ruth Butkovich, his daughter and her husband Barbara and Randy Jones, and four grandchildren - Rory, Stefan, and Sasha Butkovich, and Nicole Jones.
