Hazel Arlene Badder, 90, of Hillman passed away on Friday, June 17, 2016, peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones.

Hazel was born on November 15, 1925, in Midland, MI to Walter and Alvina Friedle. Her mother died shortly after giving birth to her. Her father later married Lena and together they raised her and her siblings. Hazel grew up on a farm and had two brothers and a sister. Hazel was the youngest in the family. There were chores to do every day and it gave her the strong work ethic that she continued throughout her life. She attended grade school and high school in the Midland school system graduating in 1942. She continued her education by attending nursing school in Saginaw. With World War II in progress, Hazel joined the Cadet Corp. Nurses. Her fiancé Rex was already serving in the Army. The war ended before Hazel was called to duty. Hazel graduated from nursing school in 1947 as a registered nurse. She worked in the office of Dr. Wilbur Towsley, M.D. and also did private duty nursing. She married her high school sweetheart Rex Badder on February 14, 1946 in Midland. Hazel quit nursing in 1954 to raise her four girls. In 1965, Hazel and Rex made the lifelong decision to move north and bought the Hillman Hardware. Their fifth daughter was born in Hillman in 1968. Hazel loved working at the hardware store, and in 2015 celebrated 50 years of ownership. Hazel had many stories to tell and share over the years and many customers will always remember her free advice, and the fact that she always used a paper and pencil to add up their purchases. Hazel loved to crochet and sold and donated many afghans and doilies that she made. She loved hunting, baking, gardening, and fishing on the Thunder Bay River. Above all, Hazel loved people and continued to work at the hardware until 2014 when ill health forced her to retire.

Surviving are her five daughters, Pam Greenough, Jan (Rick) Oswald, Nancy Parent, Mary Virostko, Jodi (Andy) Duplay; brother-in-law, Donald (Ardith) Badder, Dale Badder; sister-in-law, Emma Badder; 10 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Hazel was preceded in death by her husband Rex; parents, Walter and Alvina; stepmother, Lena; brothers, Russell and Merlin Friedle; and sister, Irene Shillair.

The family would like to express their thanks for all the help and love from Cindi Alexander, Kathy, Tina, and Kaylee Freitas, Hospice and their staff, Chaplain Joe, Pastor Mandley, and Hillman VFW. Special thanks goes to Mark and Nikki Oswald and great granddaughters, Madelyn and Abigail for all the love and help they gave their “GG”.

Visitation will take place on Monday at St. John Lutheran Church, Royston from 2 – 8 p.m. and where the funeral service will take place on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Jason Mandley officiating. Funeral arrangements have been handled by the Bannan Funeral Home.
