Played varsity baseball for Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University). Served as a Lieutenant (junior grade) in the United States Navy during World War II. One of the Greatest Generation.
Married Mollie Frances Holland, daughter of Preuit Irwin Holland and Lona Bell Sockwell on December 6, 1947. At his death, they had been married for over 67 years.
