Eleanor Loretta (Bailey) Horning
December 23, 1925 - September 4, 2015

Eleanor Loretta Bailey, was born December 23, 1925 in Eugene, Oregon to Lynn Hayden Bailey and Elizabeth (Petersdorf) Bailey of Monroe, Oregon. She was surrounded by her loving family when she passed away on September 4, 2015 from causes related to Alzheimer’s Disease.

Eleanor lived the majority of her life in Monroe and attended the schools there. After graduating from Monroe High School in 1943, she worked at the Woody Drug Store. She later moved to Portland to work for the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco there. Eleanor also volunteered as a plane spotter for the civil air patrol during World War II.

In 1944, Eleanor married George Horning, a Monroe High School classmate. While George was home on leave from the U. S. Navy, they were married at Monroe United Methodist Church. Immediately after their marriage, they left for Rhode Island as George underwent additional military training there. When George was assigned to serve in the South Pacific in July of 1945, Eleanor returned to Monroe and George rejoined her there after his military service was completed.

Eleanor loved music, especially singing in the Methodist Church Choir. Eleanor found great joy in raising her children. Both a home-maker and farming partner to her husband, she was considered a creative cook by her family and friends. Eleanor was also a very hard worker.

During their marriage, Eleanor and George were the survivors of two extensive floods on the Willamette River. At those times they lost all of their livestock, field crops and farming equipment. Undaunted, they persevered as that was the way of life they both loved. They loved each other and the land.

Eleanor and George raised six children, all of whom blessed them with the joys and challenges of life - Clifford, Susan, Katherine, Diana, Eric and David.

Eleanor and George were not only the parents of 6 children, but at the time of her passing, they also had 14 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

Eleanor was survived by her husband George and by four of their children. Eleanor was preceded in death by her daughter, Susan and her son, Clifford; and two grandchildren, Lydia Marie Horning and Zachary Cook.

There was a memorial service held for Eleanor on September 11th at the Monroe United Methodist Church, which was followed by a graveside service at the Monroe Cemetery.

In addition to her family, Eleanor left behind a host of friends. She is dearly missed by all who had the joy of knowing her. She enriched the lives of everyone she met. Hers was a life well-lived.
