He rejoined the Union war effort in November 13, 1861, when he was mustered in as a Sergeant in Battery G, 2nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Heavy Artillery. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant of Battery H on October 1, 1862, and to 1st Lieutenant of Battery M on December 17, 1862.
On April 20, 1864 he was commissioned as a Captain in th 189th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, but was never mustered in, as that unit never completed it's organization. He was honorably mustered out on April 20, 1864 when his term of service expired.
