Samuel Franklin Wilkins was born in Cheshire Co., NH, on 5/8/1802. He moved to SC to work on the Broad River Canal. Samuel was married twice. On 3/21/1823, he married Patsy Bell. Some time after Patsy's death, Samuel married Martha Blackwell.
Samuel had 10 children. The first five were with Patsy Wilkins. The Wilkins family moved to Franklin Co., GA in the late 1820's. In 1840, the family moved to MS in an oxen-drawn wagon. They settled near an Indian Camp near Wallerville in what was then Pontotoc County. Their first house was made from rough-hewn trees and had a dirt floor. Later the family built a two-story brick house, the first brick house in the area. Materials were hauled from Memphis.
