John T. Barnes, aged 74, died at his residence here Tuesday evening at 5:30 o'clock, following an illness of about a month of leakage of the heart. Mr. Barnes had been ailing for a year or more, and was bedfast only six days.
He was a native of Rush county, but when quite a young man came to Knightstown and this had been his home most of the time. After coming to this city from Rushville he operated a saw mill at a lumber camp in Tennessee for some time and also owned a livery stable stock at Logansport. During his residence in this city he engaged in various lines of business.
He was united in marriage with Ella Power, daughter of the late John Power, in the fall of 1874. They had lived happily together since that time. Besides his wife, one brother, Joe Barnes, of near Dunreith, and one sister, Beckie Smelser, near Rushville, survive.
Deceased was a prominent member of the Masonic and the Knights of Pythias order and belonged to the Knights Templar branch of the former. The funeral will take place Friday morning from his late home on West Brown avenue, and will be in charge of the Masonic fraternity, Rev. G. M. Whitenack will deliver the funeral sermon. Interment Glencove cemetery."
