He was a son of Jonathan Bachman and Frances Rhea Bachman, was born at Roseland Farm in Sullivan County, Tennessee.

The family was originally from Switzerland and had come to America in the time of William Penn. The family migrated to what would become Tennessee around 1779.

He fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War serving as a Sgt. in Company G, 60th Tennessee Mounted Infantry Regiment (CSA).

He graduated in 1871 at Hamilton College, Clinton, Oneida Co., NY. He was graduated in 1874 at Auburn Seminary, Auburn, NY.

His life's work was as a Presbyterian minister. He served from 1874 to 1880 at the Presbyterian Church of Fayetteville, New York. He served as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Utica, New York, 1880 to 1896.
From 1896 to 1911, he was Pastor at the Second Presbyterian Church of Knoxville, Tennessee. From 1911 until his death, he supplied churches at Rockwood, Spring City and Jonesboro, Tennessee.
