A.R. “Sucker” Echols, Jr. passed away September 2, 2015 at the age of 85. Visitation will be Friday, September 4 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Delta Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Saturday, September 5 at 2:00 PM at the First United Methodist Church in Cooper, with burial following at Oaklawn Cemetery in Cooper.

A.R. was born on June 23, 1930 in Enloe, Texas. He was the son of the late Alford Roscoe Echols, Sr. and Virgie Mary Walker Echols. He attended Cooper school and entered the United States Air Force in 1951 serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a flight engineer stationed in Korea, Japan, and Washington D.C. In 1956 he married Elviria Lynn Cockrum in Cooper.

He was a cotton farmer and cattle rancher. He competed in bull riding and calf roping at rodeos as a young man and later enjoyed team roping. He took great pride in owning a good horse. One of his proudest achievements was being one of the founding members of the Delta Roping Club. He attended the very first National Finals Rodeo held in Dallas, Texas in 1959, and 37 years later was thrilled to get to travel to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.

He spent many hours working on tractors and visiting with friends through the years at J.P. Allen’s Station, Chandler’s Grocery, Marion’s Tire Store and Anthony’s Shop. He loved to talk and tell stories, and he never met a stranger. He was an avid reader, and a World War II history buff. He was asked many times to recount his recollections of Delta County history.

He spent many years hauling his kids and others to calf shows all over Texas and other states. The arrival of his two grandchildren was the highlight of his life. His Blue Bird Chance and Baby Shay, as he called them were the apples of his eye.

In later years, he enjoyed nothing better than drinking a cold Coca-Cola and eating popcorn while watching a rodeo on TV. A.R. is survived by his wife of 58 years Elviria, a son Alford R. Echols III, a daughter Lesley Navia and husband Diego, two grandchildren James Chance Navia and Shay Anecia Lynn Navia. Sisters-in-law Virgie James and husband Willie Joe, Sharlene Brice and husband Jamie, brother-in-law Kenneth Cockrum and wife Barbara and many nieces and nephews and their families who were very dear to him, and two special friends Cooter Moody and Sonny Jackson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers C.A. “Cotton” Echols and Travis “Pug”Echols, four sisters Florence Toon, Robbie Cassady, Louise Gant, and Bonnie Barbato, and beloved nephew James Douglas Brice, Jr.

Pallbearers will be Roy Lee Jackson, Larry Bramhall, Randy Wright, Mark Moody, Bobby Huie, Anthony Roberts, Max Moody, Sam Bettes, and Joe Bob Shaffer. Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Hayes, Cooter Moody, Robert Huie, Kevin Casey, Harold Dee King, Edwin Slough, Jimmy Allen, Robert Wright, and member of the Delta Roping Club.
