Helen Chappell King Greene was born February 26, 1928 in Saint Pauls, Robeson County, North Carolina to Lonzo Lonnie O. King and his second wife, Mary Margaret Chappell King Wright. Helen was three years old when her father died. She was sixteen when her mother remarried, to Walter Lee Wright. (Through him she had a brother, Gene Wright.)
On September 20, 1947 in Hoke County, North Carolina Helen married Jesse Lewis Greene. They had three children: Catherine Cathy Greene Boone, Everette Laurence Butch Greene, and William D. Billy Greene; four grandchildren; and, at the time of her death, three great-grandchildren. She retired at the age of 76 from her bookkeeping position with Forster Textiles of Maxton, Scotland County, North Carolina. Her hobbies included reading and gardening. On February 11, 2000 her husband predeceased her after 53 years of marriage. Helen is buried next to him at Spring Hill Cemetery in Scotland County. She passed away on November 12, 2013 in Lauringburg, Scotland County and, in addition to family, was survived by her beloved dog Scooter.
