Death of Mrs. A. J. Ames.

Phoebe A. Ames, wife of A. J. Ames of this city, departed this life at 10:30 o'clock last Monday morning, aged nearly fifty years. Mrs. Ames has resided in this community since the summer of 1867, and by her amiable traits of character has attracted to herself many friends. She was formerly a resident of Fostoria, O., where she joined the United Bretheren Church. On arriving at Alexandria, she united with the M.E. Church, in which she continued an honored and faithful member up to the time of her death, being highly esteemed by all who knew her. She was, indeed, a good neighbor, a true wife, an affectionate mother, a consistent and faithful Christian, and her death will sadden many hearts in this community. She leaves a husband, two daughters and a son, all of whom have our warmest sympathy in their sad affliction. Rev. S. D. Kemerer conducted the funeral services at the residence Wednesday afternoon, and a large concourse of friends followed the remains to the cemetery.

Mrs. Ames has been sick since July, and during the last three or four weeks of her illness suffered intensely. At the autopsy held Monday the doctors decided that death resulted from a disease of the stomach, but did not agree as to the name of the disease. Drs. Vivian and McEwan called it scirrhus cancer while Dr. Ward termed it malignant inflammation and ulceration of the stomach, with thickening of the walls.

OBITUARY.

PHOEBE A. AMES.

It is with sincere sorrow that we chronicle the death of Mrs. Phoebe A. Ames, wife of Mr. A. J. Ames of this place, which occurred at the family residence on Monday morning. Mrs. Ames had been in failing health the past eight months, but would not admit to her friends until very recently that she was seriously ill. Until a few weeks before her death she had met her domestic and social obligations with a spirit and cheerfulness worthy of one far stronger than she. The cause of her death was cancer of the stomach, as revealed by a post mortem held Monday afternoon by Drs.Vivian, McEwan, Ward and Long. She was in her fiftieth year at the time of her death.
The deceased was born in Chautauqua county, New York, and was married to Mr. Ames in Cleveland, Ohio, Sept. 21st, 1864. She was a member of the United Brethren church from 1865 to 1869, since which time she has been a consistent member of the M. E. Church. She was of a lovable disposition, as her large circle of sincere friends will attest. More delicately regardful of the comfort and happiness of others than of her own convenience she was recognized as a true type of womanly goodness. Her death will be sincerely mourned.
The funeral took place from the family residence yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock Rev. S. D. Kemerer officiating.

The cause of death was probably cancer, perhaps of the stomach. A long and nasty exchange in the newspaper after her death occurred between her attending physicians.

Mr. A. J. Ames received a telegram from Rev. Mr. Hilton on Tuesday last announcing the death of his father-in-law, Mr. Shaw, on April 25th, at New Auburn, Sibley County.

But here is a good match for the marriage of Andrew J. Ames and Phebe A. Burg? Perhaps she was married before, and Shaw was her maiden name, Burg her 1st marriage?

DEATHS.

AMES.—Irvin, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Ames, died of the Scarlet Fever after an illness of only thirty-six hours, Tuesday night March 6th, aged seven years.

Owing to the dangerous and contagious form of this disease, the funeral was private and at the house; services by Rev. G. N. Dorsey.

This little boy was Mr. Ames's only child. He was known by all throughout the village, and was a scholar in Miss Cowing's school and a member of the S. S. He was, in every way, a good and pleasant child. Young as he was, he had already shown some of the elements of character which would have made him friends and brought him honor in later years. Among his playmates, his generosity and unselfishness were especially commendable. His kindness and good temper made him everywhere agreeable and welcome. But, in life's early morning, the Good Shepherd has taken him, and he will never know how rude and harsh the tempests do sometimes blow on earth. All whose lives are innocent and pure as was Irvin's will surely meet him in the Better Land.
The Doctors that treated her were all Alexandria, Minnesota doctors.
