Nicoll Havens Dering (Yale 1813), son of Sylvester and Esther Sarah (Havens) Dering, was born at Shelter Island, Suffolk County, New York, on January 1, 1794. Soon after graduation from Yale in 1813, he began studying medicine with Dr. John C. Osborn of New York. He attended regular courses of lectures in the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, and received the M. D. degree in 1817. From then until 1843, he practiced medicine in New York. He was appointed Health Commissioner in 1818, and held this office for two years. He also was Registrar of the College of Physicians and Surgeons from 1826 until he moved away, in 1843, to Rome, New York, due to poor health. He moved to Utica in 1847, and lived there until his death.

On June 6, 1826, Dr. Dering married Miss Frances Huntington, daughter of Hon. Henry Huntington, in Rome, New York. She died in 1841, and in 1847 he married Miss Sarah H. Strong, daughter of Benjamin Strong, Esq., of New York. Dr. Dering died after a long illness, at his home in Utica, New York, on December 19, 1867. He was survived by his wife, four daughters, and one son.
