March 27, 1918 – September 2, 2015

Melvin Dunbar Gillespie, 97, of Monroe, passed away at 3:10 a.m. Wednesday at Fountain View of Monroe.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. Friday until services at 7 p.m. at Rupp Funeral Home. Rev. Evans Bentley, pastor of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, will officiate and military honors will be performed by VFW Post 1138, Monroe. In accordance with Melvin’s wishes cremation and inurnment will take place at Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle.

Melvin was born March 27, 1918 in Monroe. He was the son of Frank and Bessie (Dunbar) Gillespie.

He was a graduate of Monroe High School.

After high school he joined the US Army and served from 1942 until 1945. He was a Gunner on a half track and served in the European Theater during World War II in Italy, Morocco, England, France and Belgium. While serving he earned a Purple Heart, EAME Campaign and Service Medal, American Defense Medal, Campaign and Service Victory World War II Medal and Good Conduct Medal.

He was employed by Detroit Edison from 1938 – 1980.

Melvin loved baseball and play throughout his early life, he also enjoyed bowling. Later in life he enjoyed people watching.

Melvin was a compassionate, generous man who was loved by many.

He was a member of Floral City Harmonizers, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, VFW Post 1138, Monroe Moose Lodge 884 and past member of Masonic Lodge 27.

He is survived by daughters, Beth Knapp, Terry (Norm) Sauer and Sandy (Frank) Hudkins; a son, Tom (Dorothy) Hertzsch; sister, Ruth Herr of Inverness, Florida; ten grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
