Sallie was the ninth of eleven children born to Thomas L. Caraway and his wife, Sarah Livesay. She married James A. Vandal; the fifth of eleven children born to Joseph and Elizabeth J. Vandal(l). Sallie and James were married after 1870 and before 1880 in Greenbrier County, West Virginia. They had no children. James was a farmer in the Blue Sulphur Springs area of Greenbrier County, West Virginia. James was an older brother of Sallie's sister Rebecca's husband, Thomas A. Vandal.
