Ann was the wife of Caleb Gilbert, whom she married sometime after he arrived in Newberry County in about 1769. Very little is known about her besides her first name, her children's names, and the fact that she died in 1813.

The maiden name of Buzhardt (and variations) has been attributed to her, but to date, I've seen no evidence supporting it, and Buzhardt researchers have no information on her. Another historical reference says her name was Chandler, but the Chandler family of Newberry County is pretty well researched, and there is no fit.

One possible clue as to who she may have been lies in DNA evidence as well as an estate settlement. A couple of descendants of Caleb and Ann have unexplained DNA matches with a descendant of John Marbut and Sarah Inman of Newberry County. Sarah was the daughter of Joshua Inman, and be it coincidence or not, Ann's son Thomas Gilbert was the executor of his will. Joshua Inman's wife was named Ann per his will, but unfortunately he did not name his children. If he had a daughter Ann who married Caleb, this would explain the DNA connection and why Thomas Gilbert, his grandson in this scenario, was executor of his will . This is all theory at this point, though, and should not be taken as fact.

On the DNA front, if any descendants of Caleb and Ann have taken the AncestryDNA test and would be willing to share their results with me, please contact me (Jane Gilbert, memorial manager). We could possibly get very lucky and find a descendant's DNA who contains enough of Ann's DNA to shed light on who she was.
