Funeral Services will be held on Friday, February 18, 2011 at a 1:00 PM Mass of Christian Burial in St. Pius X Catholic Church in Lafayette for Helen Hernandez Broussard, who passed away at her Garden View Assisted Living residence, surrounded by her family on Tuesday, February 15, 2011.

Reverend Steve LeBlanc, Pastor of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Lafayette, will be the Celebrant of the Funeral Mass and will conduct the funeral services. Giftbearers will be Elliott Gooch and Ava Gooch. Lectors will be Sister Ameline Theriot and Jennifer Godley. Karen Melancon and the St. Pius X Choir will sing for the services.

Entombment will follow at Lafayette Memorial Park Mausoleum, where she will join the love of her life, Paul "Parrain" Broussard, for her final place of rest.

A native of Lafayette Parish, she was a retired educator in the Lafayette School System who dedicated her life to education as a teacher for many years at both Milton and Comeaux High School. She had a long and happy retirement during which she developed a talent for painting, leaving many pictures to be enjoyed by her family. She loved traveling and enjoyed many trips across the country with her family.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Paul Broussard; two sisters, Lettie Foreman and Lydia Boudreaux; and two brothers, Andrus and Mervine Hernandez.

Helen is survived by one sister, Joyce and husband Paul Crochet, as well as sister in law, Rose Hernandez.

Although she never had children, her kindness and compassion enabled her to develop a very close relationship with her nieces and nephews including: Peggy Piazza, Travis Godley, Lori Gooch, Terry Crochet, Jenna Crochet, Michael Crochet and Sara Leger. Other nieces and nephews include: Jimmy Hernandez, Gerald Hernandez, Dale Hernandez, Sandra Donaldson, Cynthia Laurent, Gale Varcarolis, Judy Johns and Kelwood Boudreaux. She also had numerous great nieces and nephews. She was known as "Nannie" to all of them and even like a second mother and grandmother to some.

Pallbearers will be Travis Godley, Blake Gooch, Wyatt Gooch, Michael Crochet, Terry Crochet and Dale Hernandez.

Honorary pallbearers will be Paul Crochet, Gerald and Jimmy Hernandez.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the caregivers at Garden View Assisted Living, Heart of Hospice and Griswold Staffing Services for the excellent care she received.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visitation on Friday, February 18, 2011 at Martin & Castille's DOWNTOWN Lafayette location from 9:00 AM until the time of service. A Rosary will be prayed by Sister Ameline Theriot on Friday at 11:00 AM in Martin & Castille Funeral Home.
