William was a veteran of the War of 1812. He served in the 3rd Regiment East Tennessee Militia in Captain Elihu Milliken's Company, Commanded by Col. William Johnson. He enlisted on September 17, 1814, in Knoxville, Tennessee and serviced as a Private. He mustered out of service in May 1815.
He married Martha Elizabeth (Taff) Copeland (my 4th great-grandmother) on October 23, 1815 in Jefferson County, Tennessee.
They had ten children, Davis, John Richard (my 3rd great-grandfather), Sarah (Polly), Peter & Joseph (Twins), Rebecca, Solomon, William Riley, Calloway, and Mary Elizabeth Copeland.
He moved to Gasconade/Osage/Maries Counties, Missouri in early 1832. They settled on "Steinman Place", on the lower "Big Maries River" and lived there the remainder of their lives.
He was a farmer by trade and worked the land in Maries County, Missouri area for years.
He was a active member of the Vienna Methodist Church and a member of the Vienna Masonic Lodge.
He died on January 6, 1862 in Vienna, Maries County, Missouri.
He is buried in the Vaughan Cemetery, Maries County, Missouri next to his wife Martha Elizabeth (Taff) Copeland my 4th great-grandmother.
