The two large monuments standing next to each other for Arthur Huckins & Mary Risdon were enigmas to me as they appeared together in only one online record. Thanks to Chuckie Blaney for providing an obituary for Arthur & some much needed information to fill in the gaps.

Litchfield Saturday Review, 8 April 1893:
"A sad case of drowning occurred at Forest City last Saturday. Arthur Huckins started across the Crow River below Forest City and when about half way across the ice broke and although he kept above water for about twenty minutes he was unable to get out as the ice would break every time he tried to climb out. Two or three people were on the banks but were unable to save him. The body was under the ice and not found until yesterday. Deceased leaves a wife and three small children."

Born in Maine, the son of Mary Burns & Ariel Ward Huckins. (The fate of his father is unknown). By 1880 he was living in Forest City, MN ("A Hudkins") with his mother & her new husband, Thomas Risdon. In the late 1880's he married Luella Eveline Wakefield, daughter of Leander Wakefield & his first wife Lois Sturtevant. Arthur fathered three children with Luella (Theodore Sylvester, Mary Elizabeth "Mamie" & Arthur Clement) before his untimely death.

In the aftermath of the tragedy Luella was unable to care for the children on her own & the older two were placed in an orphanage while the youngest, Arthur Huckins was taken in by her brother, Theron Wakefield, & his wife Flora. Arthur was later adopted by Theron & Flora & his name was changed to Wakefield. About a year after Arthur's death Luella was able to take back from the orphanage her son Theodore. (Theodore retained the Huckins surname even after his mother remarried to Henry Jacob Schreiner, who raised him). Daughter Mary E Huckins was also later adopted by Theron & Flora Wakefield & had her name changed to Wakefield. (I have no further information on Mary).
