Local resident, 78-year-old Shelby Thompson died at his home, 1508 South Henry Avenue, on Tuesday. He and his wife, Laura Kinser Thompson, were married in Tazewell County, West Virginia, on October 3, 1910. Shel was a state auditor for Standard Oil Company of New Jersey in his professional life, retiring from that position in Charleston, West Virginia. Upon retirement, he and Laura moved to Elkins, the home of their younger son, where he took pleasure in expressing his creativity through carpentry. He was a Mason and lifelong member of the Methodist church. He was pre-deceased by his parents, James & Fannie Thompson, and one younger sister, Georgia Kessee. He is survived by his wife of 57 years; two sons, Kermit H. and wife Rosemary from South Bend, Indiana, and his younger son, a local medical doctor, and daughter-in-law Ann Summers Thompson; brother, John W., Mount Airy, Maryland; sister, Daisy (Mrs. Hicks) Belcher, Poolsville, Maryland; six grandchildren; and several great grandchildren. Shel was a big man with beautiful, big, blue eyes, a finely-tuned moral code and strong work ethic. A joyful man, he brought laughter to his family through sharing many humorous stories about his experiences in a variety of greasy diners while traveling for Standard Oil. Services were conducted on November 15 at the John W. Lohr Funeral Chapel, Elkins.
