Before her marriage to Frederick Walker Gwynne, Dorothy was a successful artist known for her "Sunny Jim" comic strip. Dorothy was the mother of actor Fred Gwynne (1926-1993) who is buried in Sandy Mount United Methodist Church Cemetery in Finksburg, Maryland. Her grave contains her cremated remains.
The central monument in the Gwynne plot does not include Dorothy's name. It may have been erected before her death in 1978.
