Dorothy Goddard Ficken Gwynne was the daughter of architect Henry Edwards Ficken (1852-1929.) Her mother was the first wife of Henry Edwards Ficken, Josephine Hubbard Ficken, who died on March 22, 1886, shortly after Dorothy's birth.

Some family trees on ancestry.com state that Dorothy's mother was her father's second wife, Mrs.Mary (Goddard) Este, but the second marriage did not take place until January 1, 1889. For the most detailed examination of these facts see the following genealogy. Be sure to read the footnote regarding #7:

Before her marriage to Frederick Walker Gwynne, Dorothy was a successful artist known for her "Sunny Jim" comic strip. Dorothy was the mother of actor Fred Gwynne (1926-1993) who is buried in Sandy Mount United Methodist Church Cemetery in Finksburg, Maryland. Her grave contains her cremated remains.

The central monument in the Gwynne plot does not include Dorothy's name. It may have been erected before her death in 1978.
