First Lieut. Lawrence Douglass Greene was born in Richmond, Virginia, the son of Lawrence V. Greene and Margaret Lindsey Greene. He attended Groveton High School in Alexandria, Virginia. He graduated from the Augusta Military Academy in 1961 and attended the University of Arizona where he studied architectural engineering. In August 1966 he enlisted in the United States Army and completed officer candidate school. He then went to the Army Airborne school and was assigned to the 2nd Armored Division at Fort Hood in Texas. In July 1967 he went to Vietnam where he later transferred to the 173rd Airborne Brigade. He died at age 25 when he was killed in action on January 30, 1968 in South Vietnam. Survivors included his parents who were both natives of the District of Columbia and one sister, Page, all residents of Germany where General Greene was Assistant Commander of the 3rd Infantry Division. Additional relatives included his grandmother, Mrs. S.A. Hays of 2013 Hillyer Place Northwest. Services with full military honors were at Arlington National Cemetery.
