Patty L. Balloun, 88, of Russell Kansas, died on Tuesday, August 25, at the Gove County Medical Center facility in Quinter, Kansas.

She was born in Russell, Kansas, the daughter of Herbert Oral and Katheryn (Schmitt) Black. She grew up and attended school in Russell.

She met, fell in love for the second time, and was united in marriage to Lloyd Balloun on January 18, 1955 in Russell. They were married for 28 years before Lloyd’s death.

Patty was in the restaurant and food service business from the time she started as a teenager in a Gorham restaurant. She later managed restaurants in Plains, Liberal, Kismet, WaKeeney and Quinter. She also worked in the food service business in Bellingham, WA and in Russell, KS. Years later people still talk about her amazing burgers at the Satellite in WaKeeney and her Mexican food in Quinter, especially the “topitillas”. And, we can’t forget her awesome cinnamon rolls! In her younger years she enjoyed bowling in a league and participating in bowling tournaments. In her later years she was an enthusiastic and competitive bridge player and she enjoyed attending bridge tournaments for as long as she could. Up until the time she became seriously ill, Patty played three times a week driving to WaKeeney, Hays and Russell.

Patty’s faith, family and friends were the central part of her life and she spent many hours praying for family and friends, and was always eager for fellowship in the word with others. She was a member of the Assembly of God church.

Surviving family include 4 children; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lloyd L. Balloun on August 08, 1983; brothers Jack Black, Herbert Junior Black and Robert Dean Black; sisters Dorthy Darrell, Shirley Schmidt and Eva Lea Layton.

A celebration of Patty's life will be held at 10:30 on Monday, August 31, 2015, at the Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary in Russell with Pastor Exie Barber and Pastor Jim Alexander officiating. Burial will follow at the Prairie Lawn Cemetery in Gorham, Kansas. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell is in charge of the funeral service arrangements.
