Porfirio was preceded in death by his father, Amadeo Fernández, his mother, Demecia Fernández of Truchas, NM and his son-in-law, Gary “Bennett” López of Albuquerque.
Porfy was born on August 20, 1934 in Truchas, NM, where he grew up and flourished in the Catholic Church and its community.
Porfy graduated from high school in Santa Cruz, NM in 1954 before joining the United States Army, where he served from 1955 until 1957.
In October of 1958, he married Lydia Pacheco, his wife of almost 57 years. The two made their home in Grants, NM, where they raised their four children and six grandchildren for 58 years.
While in Grants, Porfy worked for 34 years as a Uranium Mill Operator. After retirement, he worked for the Parks and Recreation Department in Grants.
Porfy was an avid sports fan, never missing his UNM Lobos or Denver Broncos games. Porfy moved to Albuquerque in January of 2015, where he resided until his passing. Porfy’s happiness was spending quality time with his wife, children and grandchildren.
Porfy is survived by his wife, Lydia Fernández, and his children, Debbie Fernández of Albuquerque, Rita and Chris Montaño of Grants, Lionel Fernández of Albuquerque and Lisa López and Matthew Myers of Albuquerque. Porfy is also survived by his grandchildren, Danielle Montaño, Diandra and Jeremy Salcido, Samantha Montaño, Valerie Hernández, Matthew Hernández and Stephen Montaño, his sisters, Gloria Fernández of Truchas, NM and Pilar Valverde and her husband, George of Albuquerque, his close friend and second son, Henry Lucero and his grandcats, KC and Zera, whom he loved so much.
A public viewing will be held on Friday, August 28, 2015 from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at French – Westside. Rosary will be recited on Saturday, August 29, 2015 at 10:15 a.m., with a Mass to follow at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Catholic Community, 5415 Fortuna Road NW, Albuquerque, NM. A Graveside Service at Sunset Memorial Park, 924 Menaul Blvd., will be held following the services. Pallbearers will be Matthew Hernández, Jeremy Salcido, Stephen Montaño, Matthew Myers, Chuck Martínez and Andrew Chávez.
