Dorothy E. Pokusa, 80, of Lower Burrell, formerly of New Kensington, died Saturday, Jan. 14, 2006, in the emergency room at UPMC St. Margaret, Pittsburgh.

Born July 13, 1925, in Harrison, the daughter of the late Alexander and Annie (Harris) Carney, she lived most of her life in New Kensington and the past two years in Lower Burrell.

She was a graduate of Tarentum High School and the New Kensington School of Nursing.

A homemaker, she was a licensed practical nurse/head nurse at the former Georgian Manor Nursing Home in Brackenridge for 13 years.

She was a member of St. Mary Czestochowa Roman Catholic Church, New Kensington, and the New Kensington Eagles and Moose.

She was head of the Democratic Committee in New Kensington with her husband and she enjoyed camping, playing Scrabble, shopping and collecting dog statues.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Chester L. Pokusa; a daughter, Katie (Don) Fortuna of Kittanning; a son, John Pokusa of Pittsburgh, a granddaughter, Shelly (Darryl) Hall of California; grandsons, Scott Kendrick of Pittsburgh, Justin Krystek of Pittsburgh, Christopher (Kerrie) Krystek of Natrona Heights, Jacob Parison of Allegheny Township, Nicholas Fortuna of Kittanning; five great-grandchildren, Maisy Krystek, Angel Bobbert, Morgan Hall, McKenna Hall and Ethan Krystek; and a brother, David R. Carney of Springdale.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia L. Parison on Sept. 30, 2004; three brothers, Frank, Robert and Albert Carney; and six sisters, Ruth Wells, Ethel Bargerstock, Jennie Sieradzki, Mildred Brucker, Florence McAllister and Betty Dixon.

Relatives and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the DUSTER FUNERAL HOME INC., Tenth Avenue at Corbet Street, Tarentum, where services will be conducted at 9:20 a.m. Wednesday. Christian Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mary Church by her pastor, the Rev. Richard P. Karenbauer. Entombment will be in Mt. Airy Cemetery, Natrona Heights.
