Irma married Frank Schwantes Jr., on September 1, 1940, in Estherville, Iowa.

After marriage Frank and Irma lived in Canby, St. Paul, New Ulm and later years in Fridley where Irma was active in the children’s school as a PTA officer and a room mother.

In 1959 Irma began her employment at Holly House, a Hallmark card and gift shop in Fridley and purchased that business in 1964 where she remained until 1968.

In 1972, Frank and Irma moved to Fulda where they purchased the Lanoue Bowling Lanes renaming it Fulda Recreation and Café. Together, with the help of family, they operated the Fulda Rec from 1972 until 1984 enjoying the many bowlers as well as frying burgers for their faithful customers. In those years they also purchased and operated the Fulda Theater and Fulda Mens Clothing Store. The theater was later converted into a roller skating rink after being gutted by a fire. Frank and Irma retired from all three businesses in 1984 during the farm crisis. It was at that time that Irma took a writing course through compus and began work as the Fulda Correspondent for the Worthington Daily Globe.

In 1987 Irma began a new career writing a column for the Daily Globe, at the request of Ray Crippen, called Reminiscing. In 1997 she published a collection of columns in a book and also had some of her writing published in National Magazines and in Voices, a hard cover book published by the American Legion. Since 1994, Irma has been writing the Souvenirs column in the Fulda Free Press. Frank and Irma had a full and happy life together sharing many memories with their eleven children.

She served for 25 years on the Fulda Charities Board and was a Senior Advisor of the Fulda Community Education Board. She was a past member of the VFW and Fulda American Legion Auxiliaries and of the Fulda Tops Group holding offices in each of these organizations.
