Some people claim his mother's maiden name was Timmons and that's possible, but it's just as likely his first & middle names came from a connection/association his father had to a neighboring Bedford Co., TN landowner named Charles Timmons in the 1820s. His brother, "John Turner" Shipman, also seems to be named after a neighbor of the same name.
