Lawrence Jacob Tschirhart of Bigfoot, 91, passed away on Aug. 22 at Devine Health and Rehabilitation, surrounded by his family and those who loved him most.

He was born in his country home in Castroville in 1923 to Lorine (Wernette) and Sam Tschirhart.

As a child, Lawrence attended St. Louis Catholic School in Castroville where he sang in the choir and played baseball.

He married Doris Hutzler on Oct. 28, 1947 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Devine. The couple met on Valentine's Day and instantly bonded over their faith and common ancestry. They married just eight months later.

Lawrence loved the land and made his living as a farmer. Maintaining the Tschirhart and Sons farm was a seven-day a week job, but Lawrence always found time to dedicate Sundays to his faith and visiting family. He loved fishing, hunting and anything to do with the outdoors. On one famed fishing trip, he caught so many fish the hooks couldn't be baited fast enough.

Lawrence enjoyed traveling. In addition to visiting all but three states in the United States, he spent time in Israel, Rome and Austria. But his favorite place to visit was his homeland, Alsace Lorraine. He was famous in Alsace, recognizable by his brown cowboy hat which was signed by all new friends he met on his travels. He loved to sing, especially in the Alsatian dialect. His wife said that Lawrence never met a stranger; everyone was an instant friend. Not once in his life did he judge someone by how they looked; he only say the inner beauty in everyone. He lived his life based on his faith. Nothing was impossible. He started farming when he was 16 years old with nothing more than a couple of mules, a horse and a cultivator. His 2,000-acre peanut farm between Pearsall and Charlotte now uses top-of-the-line John Deere equipment with GPS capabilities, all accomplished under Lawrence's direction.

Lawrence will forever live on the minds and hearts of his family. "Unable are the loved to die. For love is immortality." – Emily Dickinson

Lawrence was on the board of directors for the Peanut Growers Association for 25 years, and was an active member of the Shattel Community Club and Texas Farm Bureau. He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Pearsall and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Bigfoot throughout his life.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years; two daughters, Joyce Compton and husband, George, of San Antonio, and Karen Eagle and husband, Gary, of Uvalde; two sons, Charles Tschirhart and wife, Jo Ann, of Bigfoot, and Greg Tschirhart and wife, Doris, of Bigfoot; two brothers, Sammy Tschirhart of Castroville and Jacob Tschirhart and wife, Kay, of Castroville; nine grandchildren, Denesa Compos and husband, Carlos, of San Antonio, Kevin Compton and wife, Terry, of San Antonio; Patricia Tschirhart of Big Foot; Janie Stewart and husband, Michael, of San Antonio; Brian Tschirhart and wife, Jenny, of Pflugerville; Kim Eagle and fiancé, Eddie Brannum, of Uvalde; Garrett Eagle of Amarillo; Jeffery Tschirhart and wife, Leanne, of Pleasanton; and Bradley Tschirhart of Big Foot; five great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Lorine Wernette Tschirhart; one son, Ronald Francis Tschirhart; two sisters, Jeanette Otto of Castroville and Cathrine Aldrich of San Antonio; and two brothers, Leon Tschirhart of Castroville and Milton Tschirhart of Castroville.
